My Recap of the Homeschool Moms' Winter Summit (and why you MUST come next year)

I can't even begin to tell you what this weekend has meant to me.  I had really needed some time to refresh, be encouraged, and just rest (I even ordered room service one night...aahhhh).

And that's exactly what I got this weekend at the Summit.

I was encourage.  I was challenged.  I was loved and pampered.  And I laughed harder than I have in a long time.  The speakers were phenomenal and had so much wisdom to pour into us.  There were skits that had us in tears from laughing so hard, and worship music that pierced our hearts and prepared our minds.  There was an unspoken support among strangers, who quickly became friends. There was good food, and myriad door prizes.  But most of all, there was a room full of incredible woman, all with the same goals to be better wives, better moms....and with humility and grace....to be the kind of women who run into the arms of our Creator, trusting that He has equipped us for this mighty task of homeschooling.  I am still soaking in all I have heard and learned!

Here are a few nuggets of wisdom I left with......

"Require...don't Remind." Cheryl Lange
When you've trained your children in an area, there's no need to keep reminding them.  Let the consequences do the talking!

"Don't seek the answers...seek the Knower." Roxanne Parks
We often spend a lot of time seeking answers on our own rather than just going straight to the Knower!

"Righteous over right!"  Cheryl Lange
As I'm reminded in Judges 21:25, we are prone to do what is right in our own eyes. Choose righteousness (and humility) over right!

"We impress people with our strengths, but connect through our weaknesses."  (Can't remember who said this)
Isn't this the truth!?!  We connect with other moms SO much more, and on a deeper level when we can be real and honest about our weaknesses.  The honesty of these speakers was absolutely beautiful!

"A negative attitude will become a filter through which we see our own family."  Brandy Ferguson
Whew......enough said!

(Paraphrased) "We all have the same amount of time in a day....I have the same amount of hours in a day as Donald Trump.  It's how we choose to use those hours that make the difference.  What is stealing your time?"  Lisa Pennington
Such an important question to ask ourselves.  It's easy to be pulled into those things that keep us from using our time productively.  We must pay attention to those time stealers (electronics, social media, phone, etc.).  Even though those things may be good at times, they're often the biggest culprits for stealing valuable time in our already busy day.

"Motherhood is a marathon.  Embrace your race, stay the course, run with purpose, and finish strong."  Brandy Ferguson
Don't compare your race to other moms'.  Embrace YOURS, which God has uniquely created for His purpose, and has equipped you to run!

Some fun photos, now sweet memories

My name tag was ready for me.

We were greeted with a beautiful table, topped with pampering gifts and snacks.

LOVED getting to know my roomie, Heather from Spritti Bee.

This is what a homeschool mom looks like when she wakes up.  ; )

The Imperfect Homeschool Mom skit.....the FUNNIEST skit I've ever seen in my life! I laughed so hard, I cried!  I really hope it's made into a YouTube video soon!

After two years of cyber friendship, and writing for The Marathon Mom, I finally got to meet and hug my dear friend, Brandy!

I am already thinking about next year and making plans to budget my expenses.  And you can do the same.  If you put away just $25 per month, you will be able to cover:
  • Early registration
  • Hotel for two nights (even less if you share with 1-3 friends or stay one night)
  • Food (Saturday lunch is provided)
  • Buy a couple of books
Did I mention the Embassy Suites serves a FULL hot breakfast for FREE?  And not this "continental breakfast" stuff!  I'm talking omelets made to order, bacon, sausage, potatoes, biscuits, pastries, juice, coffee, and a whole lot more!  It's a beautiful thing, y'all!

You will be so blessed, encouraged, and refreshed.  Please don't miss it!

To keep up with the unfolding plans for next year, "like" the Summit FB page.  Or you can go directly to the website......Homeschool Moms' Winter Summit.

You can read what other moms had to say about the summit too.

Creating an Advent Tradition

Advent candles 2008

One of our favorite things to do this time of year is to celebrate the Advent season.

What is Advent?

The word Advent means “coming” or “arrival.” The focus of the entire season is the celebration of the birth of Jesus the Christ in his First Advent, and the anticipation of the return of Christ the King in his Second Advent. Thus, Advent is far more than simply marking a 2,000 year old event in history. It is celebrating a truth about God, the revelation of God in Christ whereby all of creation might be reconciled to God.  (The Voice)

For the past decade or so, our family has been reading three wonderful Advent books that have become our family tradition, and have been permanently imprinted on our children’s heart.

Balancing Hormones Naturally {for Moms}

Women’s Hormonal Detoxification and Balancing Program

When I was a youngin', pregnant with our first child, I remember teasing my husband one day, quipping that 'wasn't he glad that I didn't cry at the drop of a hat like those other pregnant women?'

I didn't experience hormonal issues back then. In fact, I didn't until my sixth pregnancy.  Near the end of that pregnancy, I began feeling angry for no apparent reason.  I realized then that I was experiencing the dreaded hormonal shifts that I had only heard other women talk about.  Even still, it wasn't too bad, and it was usually short lived.

Each pregnancy following, I would experience those irritable and angry feelings a little sooner in the pregnancy than the one before.  It was getting worse.  Those shifts were so unpredictable in my third trimesters that I knew I needed to do something about them or else my poor family would suffer.  Or tie me up and throw me in the closet.

A Message to the Weary Homeschooling Mom

Recently, I've had the opportunity to talk with other homeschooling moms who are struggling in some way or another.  As rewarding as homeschooling may be, it's also one of the hardest things a mom will do.  And oftentimes, we wonder if we're doing enough for our children.

As a veteran home school mom, I've encountered seasons of success; when my days are full of learning, we're keeping to our schedule, and I can see visible progress.  But I've also encountered seasons of wilderness, when we've barely gotten by, and when the school days seemed more frustrating than joyful.

Many circumstances contribute to the wilderness seasons:  New baby, illness, many littles, husband's unpredictable schedule, morning sickness, the list goes on.

But in order to keep our minds and hearts focused on this very important and rewarding task......

Training Children in Worship

After posting the article, Dear Parents with Young Children in Church, to my Facebook page, there was some discussion as to how to begin training your little ones to sit still during a worship service.  There was also some discussion about children's church, and how that may be more age appropriate and beneficial for young ones.

There is not much more I can add to encourage parents to include their children in worship, as the author did a beautiful job explaining the importance of having your children in the worship service, and encouraging moms who are already doing this.

A Letter From the Mission Field

UKPOYBWO Church Building taken 19/06/11

Today was a long, hard day. There is much work to be done here among the natives. Each day brings a little progress, but then some days, it feels like we’re getting nowhere.

I’m tired. And I’m trying not to grow weary in doing good. But the long, laborious days remind me that I can do none of this in my own strength. Things are messy here, and messes require cleaning up. And the cleaning up seems never-ending.

Fun, Easy, and Frugal Play Idea: Masking Tape Roads

My kids thought I was pretty great when I pulled out the masking tape and began creating roads that led to all their Little Peoples play sets.  We rummaged up all the cars we could find, made road lines on the tape, and created a little town.

I'm telling you, they played for HOURS!  Even better, their creative juices were flowing full force.  My basic infrastructure was not sophisticated enough, so they made more roads, added a CVS and Walgreens store out of paper, and drew up a "Welcome to" town sign (of course, after I put the camera away)!  Even some of the older kids thought it was fun enough to join in.

So go grab that old roll of masking tape that you threw out in the garage after your last move, or pick one up the next time you go to the store, and let the kids have at it!

And for you moms who struggle to get dinner going while you've got a toddler strapped to your leg, this should do the trick! ; )

42 Days to Fit: Week 3 Journal

I am now half way through 42 Days to Fit!  I thought it would be fun to give the total stats since I began.  Here are my results after three weeks:

*I've lost 7 pounds
*I've lost a total of 8 1/2 inches (measurements from bust, waist, abdomen, hips, thigh)
*My running endurance has improved greatly
*The strength exercises have become easier

Even though I'm thrilled to see visible results, I still have a long way to go.  Remember in my first journal, I mentioned I needed to drop 30 lbs?  Well, 7 lbs. is a start, but I still have a lot of work ahead to get back to this....(and the clothes collecting dust in my closet)....

This picture was taken just after we found out we were expecting baby number NINE!  So, I had already had EIGHT babies!  This reminds me that I can do it!  It just takes time and some effort, but I can do it!  :)

AND YOU CAN TOO!!!!  Are you still with me?

42 Days to Fit: Week 2 Journal

I can't believe I've completed Week 2 of 42 Days to Fit already!

How I did during Week 2:

*I lost 1 pound (Although I wish it was more, I know I'm building muscle)

*I lost another inch around my belly and an inch around my hips

*The strength training was much easier this week, therefore I enjoyed it more

*I ran 5 miles on Saturday! :)

*I had one cheat.  And I blame my oldest daughter.

So on Sunday, my married daughter, Cheyenne, came over for our usual Sunday family lunch.  She announced that she would making Caramel Frappuccinos for everyone.  I knew I would not be having one, and that was fine.

Weeeeeeell, she wasn't having any of that!  She walked over to me with a picture-perfect-magazine-worthy Caramel Frappuccino and set it in front of me.  Quickly, my other daughter, Celeste, reminded Cheyenne that I could not have one.  Cheyenne insisted.  I refused!  I told her that I had committed to this and I was sticking with it.  Well, wouldn't you know....that's when the begging began.

"Pleeeeeeaaaaassssse, Mom!  Just try it!"

Being the good mom that I am...and seeing that this could change the whole course of the universe if I did not try it, I had to do my motherly duty and drink my daughter's most perfect Caramel Frappuccino.  I'm telling you, she practically twisted my arm!  Really!

So here's how I justified my cheat.  Since we are now allowed ONE dessert this week, I will fore go my dessert.  And honestly, it hasn't been difficult to avoid treats at all.  And kidding aside, I wasn't even tempted by the Frapp.  It was delicious, but I didn't feel like I needed to have it at all.

Today begins Week 3.  I'm looking forward to it because I am already seeing results.  My body is slowly changing and I can see it.  Hooray!

Are you still with me?

42 Days to Fit: Week 1 Journal

I made it through Week 1 of 42 Days to Fit!  Hooray!

I thought I'd first share what some of my goals are for this challenge:

*Although I have about 35 pounds of baby weight to shed, my goal for this six weeks is to lose 15 pounds.

*I'd like to gain more energy.

*I'd like to be a little more toned.

*After too much indulging over the holidays, getting back to enjoying goodies in moderation

How I did during Week 1:

*I've lost 5 pounds!

*I've lost 1 1/2 inches around my post-partum belly!  (Even more if I total inches lost overall.)

*I already feel more energetic.

*I was faithful to NO dessert or sugar in my coffee.

It was relatively easy to avoid sugar in my coffee and having no dessert.  EXCEPT yesterday!  It was our daughter's birthday.  And since I always make their cakes, I was tempted with batter and frosting.  The hardest part was making the frosting!  My divine chocolate buttercream!  Oh my, was it HARD!  I desperately wanted to eat a spoonful of it!  But I didn't!  It was also difficult to watch everyone else enjoy cake and ice cream.  I even tried to rationalize why I should partake.  After all, it was my little girl's birthday, and I should join everyone.  But I didn't.  I knew that a temporary moment of pleasure would be regretted afterward!  And I knew I'd be disappointed with myself if I gave in!  I made a commitment to do this, and I'm going to see it through!

Running went well over the week, and so did the strength exercises.  I didn't particularly enjoy the strength training days, but only because I'm SO out of shape, which made it hard work.  Perhaps this week will be easier!

Today, begins Week 2!

Are you still with me?  Would love to hear from you!

42 Days to Fit: Join Me?

My sweet blogging friend, Brandy at The Marathon Mom, began her 42 Days to Fit program back in August.  Since I was pregnant, I knew I wouldn't be joining in on the fun.  However, I did plug it away in my mind, knowing I would like to do it after the baby was born.

As some of you know, I already run, and have been running for the last couple of weeks now.  So far, I haven't seen any visible results, but I've been through this enough times to know it takes time.  In addition, establishing a good milk supply for nursing is of utmost importance, so I have been eating like a horse.  Now that I have an established supply, it's time to start paying attention to what I am eating and eliminating some of the junk I've highly enjoyed over the holidays!

Today was the day....the start of Week 1!  What better day to begin a fitness program than January 1st right?  Every Tuesday will be the start of my new week instead of Monday.

So with just three and a half hours of sleep, I went running this morning.  Running will be my staple cardio three times a week.  And then I will do the circuit exercises twice a week.

Each week, I will have a food challenge and an exercise challenge.  This week's food challenge:

1. Drink only water!  Tea and coffee are okay, but NO sugar!
2. NO desserts!

OUCH!  Sugar is definitely my nemesis, so this will be a huge challenge!  I love anything freshly baked (which we do A LOT!).  Cookies, cakes, sweet breads......love, love, love.  This will indeed be my biggest challenge.

Drinking water only should be fairly easy.  I drink mostly only water anyway.  I love Diet Coke, but my husband and I had already set a goal of giving it up.  I will still have my coffee in the morning, but with no sugar.  I use heavy cream in my coffee (yep!), and will still use that.

Click here to see the Week 1 Exercise Challenge.

So, are you with me?  It would be great to have a few partners to share in the fun!  I started today, but you could begin tomorrow...or on Monday.  I encourage you to read through all of Brandy's posts leading up to Week 1 to get all the information!

Come on back tomorrow to see what I am eating to satisfy my sweet tooth!

How's this for accountability?  Who's with me?

Security From Yesterday

At the end of the year we turn with eagerness to all that God has for the future, and yet anxiety is apt to arise from remembering the yesterdays. Our present enjoyment of God’s grace is apt to be checked by the memory of yesterday’s sins and blunders. But God is the God of our yesterdays, and He allows the memory of them in order to turn the past into a ministry of spiritual culture for the future. God reminds us of the past lest we get into a shallow security in the present.

How A Mom of Many Keeps Her Sanity

# one hundred and twenty

As a mom of many, other moms are always curious as to how I keep my sanity with so many children.  "I would lose my mind with that many kids!"  But the truth is, whether you're a mom to one, two, or ten, we will all face moments when we feel like we could very well lose our minds!

My friend Vicki hits the nail on the head when she says, "If you have two children, God gives you what you need to handle those two.  If you have ten children, God gives you what you need to handle ten."

It may be that sometimes moms of many need to be a bit more creative in how we maintain our sanity, but I think overall, it's important to maintain a routine and be consistant no matter how many children you have!

Thankful Thursday: He Supplies My Needs

It's been a while since I've written a Thankful Thursday post.  I've certainly been thankful for much, but as you can see, I haven't posted anything in two weeks.

It's been very busy around here.  Busier than I'd like it to be during the summer.  And when I'm not busy, I'm just too tired.  I'm sure you've been here, right?

As I've reflected upon the things for which I am thankful, I am reminded that despite the busyness of life, and the fatigue of pregnancy and running a large family, God truly supplies all my needs

*When I am overwhelmed, He reminds me to lean on Him. (Zech. 4:6, Psalm 121:1-2)

*When I am tired, He reminds me to rest and not feel pressured to do more than I can.  (Matt. 11:28, Psalm 23:3)

*When I am too busy, He reminds me to focus on what's most important, paring down where I can.  (Psalm 46:10, Luke 10:38-42)

*When I am hormonal, He reminds me that it is temporary and that He has faithfully seen me   through the ups and downs before.  (2 Cor 4:17)

*When I am anxious, He reminds me to trust him in ALL circumstances. (1 Pet. 5:7, Prov. 3:5-6)

*When I am unmotivated, he reminds me that I can do all things through Him who gives me strength.  (Phil. 4:13)

These are all feelings and emotions I have been experiencing over the last few weeks.  I've been here before.  And each time, He grows me a little more.  I've learned a lot from being in this season many times.  And for this, I am grateful.

In between the busy, the fatigue, the overwhelmed, and the anxious, I've also had much joy.

*I'm thankful for the growth of our sweet baby...and wonderful movement I feel every day.

*I'm thankful that all the kids love on my belly and look forward to this little one's arrival.

*I'm thankful for God's provision of our daily bread, our roof above our heads, and for energy at the very moment I need it.

*I'm thankful for the carefully chosen activities that nurture and benefit our children.

*I'm thankful for a phenomenal husband who takes such good care of me and the children.  And who, even now as I write, is upstairs reading to all the kids so that I can have a moment of peace.

*I'm thankful for a house full of children who wear me out and sometimes push me to my limits, but who bring so much joy, laughter, vitality, helping hands, and love beyond measure to our home.

Thank you Father!  You are good!

What are you thankful for this week?  Please share!  And if you blog, consider linking up with The Marathon Mom!

Raising Teens Part 2

You can read Part 1 here.

In Part 1, I shared with you the joys of raising our teen girls.  I think it's important to talk about the joys of teens because often our culture says that the teen years will be difficult and should be feared.  You've heard it before, "Just wait until they're teens!"  So encouraging to new parents, right?

If you are parents to little ones, don't be afraid!  Pray that God will give you the wisdom to shepherd your children into God-fearing teens, and then adults.  If you're parents to teens already, enjoy them.  Talk with them and pray for them continually!   If you have a teen who has rebelled, pray that God would turn his/her heart around, and trust that He is in control and has a purpose for their lives.

No matter how perfect we may perceive a family to be, we all have the same thing in common.  It's called our sin nature.  None of us are immune to it, so we can expect some tough spots along the way.

You can find the rest of the article over at The Marathon Mom.

Raising Teens Part 1

I don't often write about raising teens.  My primary focus at Sacred Mommyhood is encouraging moms with littles.  However, I do have two teens (one of whom is married now...she's 19), and would love to share a bit about our journey through 'teen hood'.

Coping with Morning Sickness

111_000000aee_011a_orh206w334_Pregnancy.morning-sickness

There's nothing more exciting than the news of a pregnancy.  Such a blessing.  So much to look forward to.  A new child to love and nurture.

But as soon as morning sickness makes its grand entrance, that seems to be all I think about.  My whole day revolves around my level of sickness.  And then there's the food.  Eating constantly so that there is always something in my belly, even though nothing sounds particularly appetizing.  I call this "preventative eating".....though it doesn't so much prevent as it just helps from feeling worse!

I don't know about you, but I'm one of those who is willing to try just about anything to help with the nausea.  I'm one of those worst case scenario women who enjoys the blessing of morning sickness all day...and lasts upwards of six months.  Seven months is my record.  But I've also been one of those who don't find much relief in remedies and even a couple of prescriptions I've tried.

But this time, something is working.  No, morning sickness is not gone, but I am not nearly as sick as I usually am at this point.  So I'll share what I've been doing.  But first, I'll share all that I've tried in the past...'cause it might just help someone else.

In The Past

Phenergan-Ugh!  Made me super sleepy and didn't take any of the nausea away.

Crackers before getting out of bed-Really?  Does this help anyone?  I must know.

Ginger- Mostly in tea form.  For me, helps with the saliva issue.  Anyone else deal with that too?

Zofran-Very expensive!  I was told it was a miracle for most women so of course I said, "sign me up!"  Unfortunately, wasn't my miracle.  It did take the edge off, but wasn't worth the high cost for me.

Unisom and B6-Out of all the remedies, this one helped the most.  While it didn't take away the nausea, it did take me from vomiting all day to just once or twice a day.  It helped me to get off the couch and function.  I would take one half of a Unisom (store generic version) and a 50mg B6 twice a day.  Usually at 7am and 7pm.

The Bean Cure-I tried this in my last two pregnancies.  It did help temporarily, but I got so tired of eating beans that I would give up on it fairly quickly.  You can read the fascinating article here.

If you're struggling with morning sickness, these things above do help many women, so give them a try.

As soon as I found out I was pregnant this time, I began scanning the Internet for anything new that I could try.  I read about every theory behind morning sickness and made a list of things that could help.  And basically, I've incorporated all of them into my day.

Now

Cut waaay back on sugar and caffeine-Yeah, yeah, I know this isn't new.  It's just that I never put much stock in cutting back on them.  I don't do a whole lot of caffeine anyway, but sugar, you betcha...we're bakers around here!  I read that sugar and caffeine can exacerbate morning sickness...so after years of ignoring it, I decided to give it a try.

The Bean Cure-Okay, I know I mentioned this above...but this time, as soon as I found out I was pregnant, I began eating beans twice a day!  Yes siree!  In theory, I should not be having any nausea, but I am.

Alas!  There's a difference.

I didn't start feeling icky until much later than normal...and at nine+ weeks, I am not nearly as sick as I usually get.  I am still eating beans twice a day and am determined to keep doing it as long as I need to.  Thanks to Pinterest, I found myriad new bean recipes that have made eating beans twice a day much easier.

Alkalizing-I read that keeping your pH at an alkaline level can reduce morning sickness.  So far, I have not had access to pH or alkaline water, but I did do a search on alkaline foods.  Celery, watermelon, cucumbers, almonds, tomatoes, garlic, onions, and avocado (to name a few) are on the list, so I've been eating those often.  The watermelon is great for thirst since it is packed with water.  And I've made sure to keep celery, cut up into sticks, on hand.  I make myself a little baggie of celery, carrots, and red bell pepper sticks to take with me wherever I go.  (Update: A friend gave me some pH water, and it seemed to help a LOT the first day.  She said it was time/light sensitive, so after 12 hours, it didn't help as much.  Must go get more!)

Unisom-I read recently that B6 can exacerbate the nausea and that some women were finding relief with the Unisom alone.  At about 8 1/2 weeks, I felt another rise in my level of sickness (but still not as severe), so I decide to begin taking a half of a Unisom just at night.  So far, it seems to be helping.  Almost like it shifted my level back down.  I should say here that I am getting plenty of B6.  I get it in my food, that I can now keep down, and in my SuperMom vitamin that I can also keep down!  If you suspect you are B6 deficient, you may want to take the B6.  Oh, and also, caffeine destroys B6, so yet another reason to cut back or eliminate it.

Lots of protein-I usually get plenty of protein in the meat and beans I eat, but I have also been eating LOTS of nuts and seeds.  In addition to my veggies, I eat handfuls of nuts (cashews, walnuts, almonds, and peanuts) and seeds (sunflower and pumpkin) throughout the day.  And Greek yogurt, which has twice the protein as traditional yogurt, has become my new dessert.

Apple Cider Vinegar and Lemon water-I read that using about 2 teaspoons of ACV in warm water can relieve nausea.  I was very hesitant to try this since it doesn't sound appealing.  But to my amazement, it does help.  It settles my tummy pretty quickly and helps with the excessive saliva that  is a huge issue for me during morning sickness.  Since ACV was working, I also tried squeezing a half a lemon's worth of juice in hot water...and that works too.  I tend to feel great the first half of the day (which has never happened), and then begin feeling a bit more queasy as the evening goes on.  This is when I reach for my ACV or Lemon "tea"!

Peppermint Oil-My sweet friend, Kim, sent me a sample of Young Living Peppermint Essential Oil.  In addition to the hot lemon water for those sudden waves of nausea, I put a drop of Peppermint oil on my tongue.  Or even just smell it.  This also offers quick relief for those sudden waves of nausea.

I think it's important to add that I started doing all of these things (except the unisom) as soon as I found out I was pregnant...before morning sickness came.  I think it's important to mention because all this collectively may be what has helped.  For example, once I am in the throes of morning sickness, I usually cannot eat raw veggies...and most things good for me just don't sound good.  So I eat what I think I can tolerate, but probably make me worse in the end.  Maybe?  I also think because I made a habit of eating these things, they're what sound good now.

Some Additional Coping Tips

Prepare if you can.  As soon as you find out you're pregnant, and before sickness sets in, do what you can to make things easier when it comes.  Stock your freezer with meals for your family.  Make individual portions of foods you can eat quickly when the need arises.  Have a variety of high protein go-to snacks like nuts and seeds in your pantry.

Accept help!  If you have a friend or church family willing to provide meals, care for little ones, or clean your house, accept it!  Allow them to be the hands and feet of Jesus!  It blesses you, and it blesses them as well.  Don't be stubborn!

Embrace it!  If you're like me, where nothing truly takes it away, you've got to come to the point where you can embrace it.  I've learned over all these pregnancies that God uses this time to draw me near.  I am in constant communion with Him.  Even if I am crying out in despair, begging for Him to have mercy on me, I am talking with my Lord.  He teaches me what it means to trust Him and to rely on him every second.  It also helps to keep in mind that this won't last forever and that a wonderful gift comes at the end.  It's not for nothing.  It's worth it!  God is faithful!

A Change of Heart

(L to R: Ethan 5, Chloe 7, Sophia 9, Jonathan 2, Seth 10, Cheyenne 19, Amelia 1, Celeste 16, and Genevieve 4)

I originally published this years ago.  But since I get asked about our story often, I thought it would be fun to update it and republish.  Please keep in mind that this is our story and we know that God does not lead all families to the same conviction.  Here is our story....

Our Journey to Many Children

I am no stranger to large families. My mother is the sixth of fourteen children, my dad is the oldest of five, and I am the second of four children. Even in the generations before, there were many children in our family line. I grew up surrounded by lots of family and LOVED the chaos of family gatherings and reunions. My husband, however, is an only child, and so is his mother. You'd think that I was already signed up to have many children and that my husband would lean toward just one or two. But, that wasn't the case....

When Greg and I were engaged, I don't think we necessarily talked about a specific number of children.  Despite loving my large extended family, I had always said that I didn't want children.  Thankfully, just loving Greg changed that, but I probably didn't think we'd have more than two.  My husband, however, was in the "I want 20" camp right from the start.  I would just laugh and think "yeah right"!

Three months after we were married, we found out that we were expecting our first child. We were thrilled. But when I began experiencing death-like morning sickness (hyperemesis gravidarum), I wasn't so sure I would ever do this again! I was so sick for seven months. Continuous vomiting, dehydration, etc. We lived in England at the time, so we had no family to help out.  After this, I knew I would not be in a hurry to do it again. Our daughter was born and we were very happy first-time parents.

Yet, the memories of how sick I was haunted me. About two years later, I began feeling suspiciously queasy and took a pregnancy test. It was positive. Although I welcomed the "idea" of another baby, I was terrified of going through such agony again. And how would I do it now with a toddler? And to make matters worse, we were moving back to the states from England in just a few months.  How would I handle a major move, plane rides, a toddler, all while feeling terrible?

The morning sickness intensified and I just took it one day at a time. Our little two year old spent most of her days watching children's videos and I cringed each time she said she was hungry. It was difficult to get up and prepare food. Greg was working 24 hour shifts, so when he was at work, he was gone all day and night!  It was tough.

It came time to move. I left England a month before Greg so that I could spend more time with my family before heading to our next base. I was four months pregnant, still sick, and was now going to travel back to the states with our 2 year old daughter, by myself.  Sixteen hours and three plane changes later, I made it home. Barely! That night, my dad offered to go get me something to eat and food actually sounded good. The next morning, I woke up and felt great! God was good and faithful and allowed morning sickness to last only four months instead of seven! Our second daughter was born and we were the honored parents of two little girls. I was content.

I think I immediately felt like two was enough for us, although I knew my husband wanted more. He never pressured or asked, but I knew his heart welcomed more children. As time went on and the girls got bigger, I began to enjoy the independence and the freedoms of having children out of baby stage. I also began planning my future which included finishing school and possibly a career in the future. I had all kinds of ambitions, goals, and aspirations. And now that the girls were getting older, I could finally work toward these goals.

When our second daughter was three, I did become pregnant.  We were excited, though again, I was fearful.  But around nine weeks, I miscarried.  We were devastated!  And though I learned just how fragile life was, I was also in no hurry to get pregnant again.

Just a few months later, we were moving again. Greg was getting out of the Air Force and we were moving back home to CA. As soon as we were settled, I enrolled in school. Oddly enough, it was during this period of life that I began to question all of my reasons for only wanting two children. This was strange to me! I loved school, I loved the girls being older, and I was set on being able to afford to send these girls to college. How would we afford more children? And, do I want to go through morning sickness again?

Nonetheless, my heart was being pulled in another direction. I questioned why I only wanted to have two children when I had a wonderful husband who wanted more? Was God not faithful in getting me through morning sickness? Will He not provide for more children? Is pursuing a career what I really want to do? And is it God's plan for all of our children to even attend college? All these questions ate at my core until finally it was clear! My heart had been opened to more children!

We were living in CA at the time and getting ready to move back to Texas for a new job. We agreed that as soon as we got back to Texas we would try for another baby. Upon a friend's recommendation of a fertility book, we began charting and trying. ;-) To our amazement, two months later we were pregnant with our third child.

Yep, sick again. This time for 20 weeks.  I survived and we welcomed our third child, our first son, six years after our second daughter! Seven months later, to our SHOCK, we were pregnant again! Sick again, still nursing baby #3, survived again and welcomed our fourth child, another girl.

Okay, at this point, I'm not sure what our "plan" was now. We still hadn't come to the point of welcoming "any and all" children, but we weren't saying we were done either. So we continued to chart. I would chart until I felt "ready" to be pregnant again. By now, I knew that God would get me through morning sickness, we knew He would continue to provide, and we were thankful for our four children.

Our fourth child was about 13 months old when we "put the charts away". Soon after, we were pregnant again. Sick again and now living in a tiny rental home. Five kids, three very small bedrooms, no problem. Our fifth, another girl, was born and we were thrilled!

God continued to do a work in both of us concerning our view of children and what scripture says about them. Over and over, scripture calls children a blessing, a heritage (Psalm 127: 3-5)! Although I think most people would have agreed that our quiver was certainly full and probably overflowing, we weren't content with that. Don't get me wrong, we were content with our five children, just not content with deciding five was "it".

During this time, I was at a home school meeting, when a friend shared with us her journey to having nine children. As a matter of fact, it looked and sounded a lot like ours. She shared of how Hannah, the mother of Samuel, prayed fervently for a child. She went on to say that she realized there were only examples of women in the Bible praying for children! There is not one example that God gives us of a woman (or man) praying not to have children. Yet, we see in the Bible that there were many varied sizes of families! And being that we know modern forms of birth control did not exist, we can rest assure that God was in control of family sizes!  Additionally, I have several friends who have always trusted God with their family size, yet only have 1, 2, or 3 children.

This, in conjunction with God's Word referring to children as blessings, arrows, and a heritage, was huge for me. God used my sweet friend's own story to continue writing ours! Thankfully, my husband shared the same conviction and we went on to have two more children. No charting, no worrying, just freedom.

You see, for us it really is freedom. Since we welcome any child God is willing to entrust us with, there are no worries about getting pregnant. We just enjoy our love for one another and welcome "the fruits of our passion", as my husband so sweetly puts it! ;-)  And this is coming from a woman who begins ovulating again 2-6 month after each baby, despite nursing around the clock.  Only God could make me this crazy!  (I mean this in a good way!) : )

Since then, we've had babies six, seven, eight, and nine, with morning sickness lasting from four to six months.  We've had some scares along the way, and moments of questioning our view.  We're human and raising nine children is hard sometimes.  But once we step back and remember where God has brought us, our spirit is renewed and we're reminded of His faithfulness.

If you know me, you know that I am NO supermom. I struggle daily just like every other mom does. I have days when I want to string these little blessings up by their toes or run away to a tropical island. But this I know....God is faithful, God has provided for our every need and then some, God has helped me not to fear morning sickness....too much, and God has freed me from the worldview ideals I held all those years ago. There's nothing I'd rather be doing than raising and growing our heritage.

I understand that this is not every one's conviction or desire.  This is simply our story, which we hope will encourage anyone who may be on the fence in this area.  If you've adopted a worldview of limiting children for reasons contrary to Scripture, I challenge you (and your spouse) to pray about it and ask God what He would have you do in this area of your life, trusting He will lead you.

Blessings,
Candace

Thankful Thursday: Even The Fleas

Fleas?

Last night at Bible study, our pastor shared a brief portion from Corrie ten Boom's story, The Hiding Place.  If you haven't read the book, there is a particular passage when Corrie and her sister were giving thanks for all things after reading 1 Thess 5:18.  At one point, Corrie's sister begins giving thanks for the fleas that infested their barrack.  Corrie didn't understand why in the world her sister was giving thanks for even the fleas.  You see, they had an incredible amount of freedom in their barrack.  They held worship services and were free to read their Bibles in the midst of an unimaginable situation.  The Nazis would patrol every other barrack, except theirs.  Because of the fleas the guards would not step foot in there.

Our pastor used this illustration to remind us to be thankful in ALL circumstances.  He shared that his desire was to be thankful for even the fleas, no matter what his "fleas" might be....and encouraged us to do the same.

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.  1 Thessalonians 5:18

I want to be thankful for the fleas.  I don't have fleas in my home (I'm so thankful!), but as a mom, I have lots of things to be thankful for.  It's easy to give thanks for my children, and good home schooling days, well behaved children, and food on our table.  But what about those other things....those fleas.  Though my fleas pale in comparison to imprisonment, and watching those around you die, these are the things for which I give thanks today....

I am thankful for this messy house because it means that a family lives here and I have a roof over my head.

I am thankful for fussy babies and whiny children because they remind me that I am the blessed mommy to nine of them.

I am thankful for sleepless nights because they are often my most heart felt times of prayer with the Lord.

I am thankful for terrible home schooling days because they remind me that I cannot do anything apart from Jesus.  They teach me a little more patience, and a little more grace.

I am thankful for the trail of toilet paper that runs through my school room (right now!) because...well I don't know yet, so I'll just be thankful.

I am thankful for morning sickness (no, I'm not pregnant) because it reminds me of the life growing inside.

I am thankful for my children's disobedience because it reminds me of the responsibility I have to correct and shepherd them in the ways of the Lord.

I am thankful for my special needs son, Jonathan, because he reminds me that we are all created in God's image, and that I would gladly welcome a thousand more Jonathans into my arms.

I am thankful for stomach bugs and colds because they show us the body's incredible ability to heal, by God's design.  Through vomit and snotty tissues we learn compassion, servanthood, and empathy.

I am thankful for hard days, difficult circumstances, and fatigue beyond measure because they all remind me to cling to my Savior and draw me to Him in ways that only difficulties can.  We learn to trust more because we see His faithfulness as he leads us through it, and He is glorified!

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds. James 1:2

I acknowledge that it's so easy to give thanks for even these things when we are not in the midst of experiencing them at the moment.  And at times, we just don't feel very thankful.   Like Corrie, we wonder why in the world we should be thankful for our circumstances.  But the Bible does not command us to feel thankful.  It commands us to give thanks!  This is my desire!  And I'm thankful for the reminder and encouragement.

..giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, Ephesians 5:20

What difficult circumstances are you thankful for today?
